As one millenium came to an end, a new century dawned. Latin pop was huge, thanks to the likes of Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and J-Lo. Robbie Williams branched out alone. Craig David crossed over with garage sounds.
Other new approaches included the hits from the Chemical Brothers, Linkin Park, Sisqo, Daft Punk, Aaliyah and Kylie Minogue.

New sounds were explored, with great songs from Arrested Development, Beck, The Grid, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails. Country came back thanks to LeAnn Rimes and Shania Twain. The Spice Girls ushered in 'girl power', Whitney belted out "I Will Always Love You", Eric Clapton turned a tragedy into a weepy smash hit and Elton John bid farewell to Princess Diana.

As one decade moved into the next, the sound of pop and rock evolved again. Technotronic, Black Box and Snap changed dance music. Rap made inroads with De La Soul, MC Hammer, Tone Loc and Young MC. New artists emerged, including Sinead O'Connor, Melissa Etheridge, Lisa Stansfield and Faith No More among them.
So pump up the jam at midnight tonight as we bust a move coz groove is in the heart!

Videos were almost as important as the songs they were advertising. It was the time of Band Aid, USA for Africa and Live Aid. Rap finally cracked the Top 10. Dance music made a strong comeback, but in new forms. Paul Simon took us to Africa with his 'Graceland' project and Prince gave us 'Purple Rain'.
Bruce Springsteen had us dancing in the dark, Sade was a smooth operator and Cameo gave us the word up.
